IGB Desktop Backup Policy[edit]
Desktop Backup is one of the most difficult things for an information technology department to take care of. In order to help manage this project, we have come up with the following set of policies. If you have any questions about these policies, please contact us.
Availability[edit]
The desktop backup service is available free to all in the IGB. However, this system is not failsafe. If you have extremely important files we suggest keeping them in more than one location.
Responsiblility[edit]
We will make our best effort to keep the system running on our end, but there will be days when for whatever reason the backup server does not respond properly. It is not feasible for us to check everyone's Retrospect client to make sure it is running properly, so we suggest that each user periodically check retrospect to see when they were last backed up and to notify us if there is a problem. In addition there if is a message that pops up stating that you have not been backed up for a period of time, we do not get those messages and therefore expect you to contact us about them.
Wireless Computers[edit]
Computers cannot be backed up while they are connected wirelessly. This is due to the infrastructure of the wireless system and will not change.
Disk Size[edit]
Machines with over 250 GB data will not be backed up. This is because the amount of time to backup desktops is limited, and if we are backing up disks this large, we will not be using this service to help the intended users.
Backup Sets[edit]
There are two backup sets that we use. The Daily backup set runs from 8:30 AM till 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and is mainly purposed for laptop computers that are only here during the daytime. The Nights and Weekends backup set runs from 5:00 PM till 8:30 AM and all weekend, and is purposed for those machines that are on during the evening and over the weekends so they can be backed up when they are not in use.
